Institute building GESIS in Mannheim, ongoing

The new institute building for the Leibniz Institute for Social Sciences GESIS includes office space on the upper floors, a conference area and a library on the ground floor. The L-shaped building is directly connected to the research and teaching building of the University of Mannheim in square B6 completed by our office in 2017.

The new institute building continues the overall urban planning concept of the 2013 competition as a second construction phase. The building structure and facade correspond to the first construction phase, creating a homogeneous urban appearance.

Analogous to the research and teaching building, the special feature of the new institute building is the further development of the familiar perimeter block development: Based on the typology of a university building with rooms of varying depth, a building is created that remains perceptible as a block edge, but at the same time achieves a clear spatial division of the block interior through the inversions into the building plots. In this way, the outside and inside of the edge of the block are brought together into a new context.
