Learning Center University Hospital Cologne, 1st prize

For University Hospital Cologne, a new learning center with outdoor areas will form the cornerstone of the inner-city hospital campus and create a place for students to meet and learn. Our design, which derives from the urban context and was awarded first prize, envisages a polygonal building with a stepped back top floor. The building has an irregular hexagonal configuration developed on a continuous triangular grid. To the north it constitutes a distinguished entry condition, and to the south it delimits the newly created campus plaza.

With its restrained facade, which is characterized by exposed concrete, large wood-framed windows, and external sunshade awnings, the freestanding building positions itself as the identity-giving heart of the campus. It is conceived for flexible use and is designed to be open. From the center of the ground floor, a vertical atrium develops upward as a connecting space. Lecture halls, seminar rooms, laboratories, and open areas for learning and communication are grouped around this communicative core. On both the second floor and the lower level, the learning center is connected to the anatomical institute. Wood-concrete hybrid construction is also employed in the interior. The materials used are both durable and natural, and can be returned to the material loop.
