Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen Indoor Swim Center

The existing swimming pool in Zuffenhausen is to be replaced by a new building. Our design envisages a compact form built of wood. The architectural configuration of the shift in the floor plan is given a distinct character by the elementary shape of the circle in juxtaposition with the orthogonal structure. This makes the main entrance easily recognizable and creates a transition to the outdoor space on the garden side. The roof is raised above the diving tower to obtain the headroom needed there. The outdoor portion of the sauna area is similarly accentuated by a circular shape.

The swimming areas occupy much of the ground floor, with the changing rooms efficiently arranged in a spatial block to the east. The sauna area is on the upper floor. To the east and south, the facade is covered almost entirely with greenery and has just a few selectively placed openings. Along the outdoor areas to the west and toward the valley, the new building opens up to the green surroundings with generous expanses of glass at the sides of the swimming hall.
