Nursing Home and Hospice of the Württemberg Sisterhood of the Red Cross in Stuttgart, ongoing

The plot of land belonging to the Württembergische Schwesternschaft vom Roten Kreuz e.V. will undergo urban restructuring in order to revamp and expand the residential nursing care facility there. Two polygonal buildings – the nursing home and the motherhouse with hospice – are arranged as an ensemble on the park-like hillside property. They are sensitively integrated into the natural landscape and form a shared public space, where an old chestnut tree and the existing rose garden are the main focus.

The new motherhouse assumes the role of its predecessor as the headquarters of the sisterhood and takes up its place on the southern part of the site to define a clear address. In addition to the administrative offices, the general reception area is located here along with the hospice for 8 people, whose accommodations are distributed over two floors.

The new nursing home replaces the Regine-Köhler-Heim from the 1950s, which no longer fulfills the building requirements for such a residential care facility. It enables seniors to enjoy contemporary living and, as a freestanding building, is clearly separated from the motherhouse. On each of its three upper floors, 15 of the home’s residents share a communal apartment; in addition to the individual bedrooms, they have a shared-use kitchen and living room at their disposal. With the generously dimensioned terraces and loggias in front and its green facade, the building carries the open space up into the vertical.
