Modernisation and Extension of Esslingen Municipal Library

Our design for the restructuring and extension of the public library in Esslingen, which has been awarded with a second prize, follows the principle of its listed environment: The buildings in Esslingen's historic city center are lined up as individual houses and form a coherent ensemble, although important buildings stand out clearly as individual houses. Also the municipal library can be read as an important individual building. The new building and extensions confidently present themselves as part of the ensemble. With its wooden supporting structure and copper shell, it is sensitively embedded in the roof landscape.

The arrangement of the uses inside follows the logic of the individual houses, as well. A »children's house« and an »administration building« complement the library, which annularly extends between Heugasse and Webergasse. The main entrance is to be located at Webergasse. In addition, the inner courtyard will be connected to Heugasse via an open passage. The basement was kept free, as conflicts with archaeological finds are expected here. The ground floor presents itself open, bright and inviting due to vertical incisions. The additions and extensions to the historically valuable existing buildings are a contemporary continuation of the historical building fabric.
