School Center Cafeteria in Gerlingen, ongoing

On the grounds of the school complex in Gerlingen is the middle school that was renovated and expanded by wulf architekten after winning a competition. From the outset, there were also intentions to build a new cafeteria that would be open to all the students of the school center, thus ensuring all-day care. The new cafeteria is designed as a finely detailed, freestanding building constructed of wood and rhythmically articulated by its load-bearing skeletal frame. Inside, the dense spatial atmosphere is primarily defined by the supporting structure and wood surfaces.

The interior is divided into two sections: a functional zone with all the ancillary spaces, and a formal public zone with the entrance area and dining hall. The roof’s distinctive, asymmetrical shape allows for a generously sized array of southeast-facing photovoltaic panels. The offset in the roof integrates a clerestory that allows additional daylight to flood into the building. The asymmetry enables the dining hall’s ceiling to be significantly higher than that of the secondary spaces, at approximately 4.80 meters. Dark corrugated aluminum panels clad the building’s facade. Wood is also prominently featured wherever there are recessed areas on the exterior, accentuating special areas of the building. A terrace extends along the entire length of the south facade, which has climbing greenery in front. Outside of mealtimes, the cafeteria will also be used as a place for learning and events, underscoring the building’s importance to the school center.
