City Hall of the Future

The City Hall of the Future competition pursues the approach of creating an urban, socially integrated neighbourhood in the centre of Berlin, characterised by a blend of cultural, educational, social, public administration and affordable housing. A new city hall building is the focus of the competition, replacing the existing city hall in the Berlin Mitte district and presenting a new, future-oriented administrative building. Our design plan features a building with a bold sculptural gesture in an urban space characterised by large-scale buildings.

The individual levels of the new building are planned as freely playable, open structures for maximum flexibility in timber hybrid construction. Public use spaces are distributed on the lower floors along the prismatic hall, interlocking with this area and the semi-public spaces. The combination of public, semi-public and internal uses promotes a new culture of transparency and proximity to citizens. The modularity of the structure is reflected in the façade, which also incorporates photovoltaic modules, rainwater collectors, ground-based greenery and a playable screen. First prize, one of three, was awarded to the concept part developed in collaboration with Rehwaldt Landscape Architects: among other things, it envisions the revitalisation of the Otto-Braun-Strasse quarter. For example, a boulevard from the GDR modernity period will be transformed into a multifunctional forecourt area assigned to the new town hall, complete with various playgrounds and seasonal sports areas.
