Primary School on Waldmeisterstraße in Munich, first phase

In order to give the school on Waldmeisterstraße a long-term perspective, the City of Munich decided to demolish the existing 1950s building and build a new primary school with four classes per grade. The new school building, designed according to the »Munich Learning House« educational concept, creates a place with versatile spaces and an inviting, pleasant atmosphere for contemporary learning.

The starting point was the constructively refined and intelligent modular system of a »Learning House« that we developed for the »Four Primary Schools in Modular Design«, completed in 2017. A single Learning House module provides four classrooms for one grade level, two rooms for full-day care, a workroom for teachers and caregivers, and a central group room. The rooms are grouped around two outdoor atriums on each floor. The ground floor houses the administration, cafeteria, and common learning spaces. The eye-catcher of the building is the central curved staircase.

The facade gives the school a strong, identity-establishing appearance. The brickwork in shades of shimmering gray emphasizes the permanence of the compact structure. In front of this are peripheral balconies constructed as a white steel structure, spanned almost invisibly by a delicate stainless steel mesh. This eliminated significant fire protection requirements for the interior spaces, allowing them to meet the pedagogical desire for openness and flexibility. The primary school has been completed as the first of three construction phases: A coherent school ensemble with a double gymnasium, ancillary buildings, and generous outdoor areas is to be built on the site by 2025. The ensemble is characterized by a strong spatial integration of the compact buildings and outdoor facilities.
