New Replacement for the Saatlen School Complex in Zurich, ranked 6th / 5th prize

The Saatlen school complex is to be newly built on a site in Zurich that is surrounded by outdoor facilities. The complex consists of two comprehensive schools that function separately on an organizational level but benefit from spatial synergies. It also includes a school for children with disabilities, a day-care center, and a sports and swimming facility. Our design entitled BOARD GAME, which was awarded 5th prize, responds to the complex task with a single building: the individual clusters of the different schools and the shared areas and multifunctional zones are all joined together like a checkerboard, yet they remain separately discernible inside.

The three-story building is perforated by internal courtyards and atriums, creating a flat structure that is compact but permeable. This assures a good supply of daylight inside, all the way down to the gyms and workshops on the lower levels. Wraparound balconies articulate the facade horizontally and provide each cluster with direct access to the outside. The roof is accessible as an extension to the schoolyard, creating an elevated outdoor space that is also available to the neighborhood on weekends.
