Martin-Lerche-Haus, Institute of Food Safety and Food Hygiene, Berlin, ongoing

The new laboratory and teaching building on the Düppel campus of Freie Universität Berlin creates a modern working environment by concentrating the Department of Veterinary Medicine and improving co-operation with other institutes. The single-storey building enters into a dialogue with its surroundings, which are characterised by both low individual buildings with pitched roofs and open green spaces: It becomes a new, characterising element of the campus and marks a structural conclusion to the south.

The folded roof structure takes into account the building regulations and makes reference to the neighbouring buildings. Two atriums bring daylight into the interior laboratory rooms and organise the new building. The circumferential corridor running along the façade connects all areas internally and allows the research and teaching rooms to be organised on one level - making the core facilities easily and directly accessible from all areas of use.

The course room designed for teaching and the demonstration hall are located directly by the entrance foyer on the north-east corner of the building facing the campus. The course room can be generously opened up to the foyer if required. The building is to achieve Gold certification in accordance with the Sustainable Building Rating System for Federal Buildings (BNB).
