Institute of Food Safety and Food Hygiene of Freie Universität Berlin, ongoing

The construction of a new laboratory and teaching building on the Düppel Campus of Freie Universität Berlin in Steglitz-Zehlendorf is intended to spatially bring together the Department of Veterinary Medicine and improve cooperation with other institutes. The university campus is embedded in the idyllic landscape, its surroundings are characterised by flat individual buildings with predominantly sloping roofs and plenty of open green spaces. Our design proposes a single-storey building that blends into this context and positions itself as part of the campus and, by virtue of its size, as its perimeter towards the south.

As a consequence of building regulations, which permit a building height of more than 7 metres only on a narrow strip, a folded roof shape takes up the predominant design vocabulary of the surroundings, but makes it possible, thanks to the thus achieved greater height, to arrange the technical areas as part of the building structure and directly next to the laboratory zones. Two elongated atriums allow daylight to enter the interior rooms and structure the new building. The all-round corridor running along the façade and the organisation of the research and teaching rooms on one level enable all areas to be connected internally, making the core facilities easily and directly accessible from all functional areas. The course room designed for teaching and the demonstration hall are located right next to the entrance with a foyer at the north-eastern corner of the building facing the campus. The location of the course room allows it to be opened up generously towards the foyer if required.
