»Komische Oper Berlin«

The »Komische Oper« is to undergo renovation, modernization, and expansion. The building complex, a distinctive element within the urban fabric, consists of several parts dating from various periods between 1890 and 1980. Our design plays with abstraction as a continuation of and supplement to the existing, engaging in an architectural exploration of the landmarked ensemble that enables the various historical stages of its development to remain legible.

The exterior of the new building is envisioned as a monolithic exposed-concrete facade whose pattern of formwork joints derived from the extant condition and flush glazing along the exterior constitutes an abstract continuation of the existing architecture. The principle of a dialogue between what exists and what is added continues to play out as a spatial experience on the inside as well: in the new casino, the present-day western exterior wall becomes an interior facade. Rehearsal stages, orchestra areas, and rooms for storage, props, and stage equipment are accommodated in the new building. Large windows in the rehearsal rooms enable the lively activity inside to also be witnessed from outside.
