Historical Oberamteistraße Museum in Reutlingen, New Building

The historic row of houses at Oberamteistraße 28–32 and the basement of the “Stone House”, which was demolished in 1972, on plot no. 34 are among the oldest rows of half-timbered houses in southern Germany and authentically reflect the building and living culture since the Middle Ages. The renovation, which is in keeping with the building's heritage status, includes the restoration of the old buildings and a new building on the site of the corner house which no longer exists. The ensemble serves as a museum, with the old buildings themselves being the exhibits.

The new building, which was completed in 2025, will provide barrier-free access to the old buildings and offer space for various event formats, encounters, creativity, and exchange. Its internal structure consists of wooden trusswork that shores up the adjoining row of houses and reestablishes the lost form of the historic house. The roof and facade surfaces are clad with a homogeneous layer of cast-glass “beaver-tail” tiles. Depending on the conditions of incident light, reflection and interior lighting, the wooden trusswork behind it is more or less visible, and the building appears translucent or glittering, like a chimera. The new building is characterized by a highly complex geometric supporting structure. The supporting structure was developed in such a way that architectural requirements and structural logic interlock precisely and follow a clear functional structure: a three-layer, gradually decreasing substructure of diagonally and horizontally overlapping wooden struts supports the glass plain tiles as weather protection. The new building does not require thermal insulation or air conditioning and also serves as a protective structure for the historic cellar.
