Refurbishment and Restructuring of School Center North in Stuttgart

With its characteristic panelized architecture and the accompanying horizontal articulation, our design picks up the architectural language of the existing building. This appears as a fundamental, structurally robust statement, whose characteristics we have strengthened in a contemporary way and which we have implemented with a clear, rectilinear formulation.

The recessed glass surfaces with black frames and the slab edge cladding made of perforated aluminum panels – which, as a consistent outer skin, were also used to clad the parapets – emphasize the stratification of the floor levels and the horizontality of the facades. Inside, the main objective was to exploit the restructuring of the school center to take advantage of previously unused space reserves and to provide them with maximum daylight.

Stuttgart’s School Center North, a vocational school for approximately 3,600 students with a specialization in business and electrical engineering, was restructured and completely refurbished to upgrade its structure, building technology, and design. Moreover, the school was integrated into the attractively green hillside below the Weißenhof Estate.

The school center, which comprises the Werner Siemens School and the Stuttgart-Nord Vocational Business School, was built in two construction phases from 1978 to 1982 – and since then it had not undergone any substantial modernization. With the limitations of the existing plan configuration, modern learning and training concepts could not be implemented. Thus, the ensemble of two schools had to be comprehensively restructured and rebuilt into a modern school center.
