New Molecular Biology Building on Bonn's Poppelsdorf Campus

With the Institute of Molecular Biology, the University of Bonn is planning a new large-scale institute as part of a reorganization and restructuring. The intended replacement building aims to provide teachers and students with optimal spatial framework conditions. The new molecular biology building is the final component on the existing Poppelsdorf campus.

The building structure represents a modern, flexible laboratory landscape. Four laboratory usage units, each approx. 400 square meters, are arranged so that they connect to flexible office areas via skywalks. This allows both larger contiguous areas and the required individual rooms to be modified accordingly. The »Green House« invites you to learn, research, and linger, while providing relaxation and symbolizing the study of biology. In addition, it supports a natural ventilation concept for all areas that do not need to be mechanically ventilated. Its external appearance is characterized by the generosity of the flexible building structure and wood. Horizontally structured glass panels are divided by wooden parapet elements. Horizontally arranged ribbons of photovoltaic elements provide structural wood protection and, together with the photovoltaic elements on the roof, support the sustainable energy concept.
