New Building for KIT Fire Station – Campus North, Karlsruhe

The new fire station building is being built on the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) North Campus. The design includes a two-storey main building and a one-storey annexe with a practice yard situated between the two buildings. This functional structuring minimises the distances in the event of an alarm and optimises workflows for repairs, office work and deliveries.

The draft takes into account the special importance of the fire station to KIT's critical infrastructure by focusing on its design. The vehicle hall resembles a large showcase with its glass gates, allowing the vehicles to take centre stage. The wooden pergola with greenery is positioned above the vehicles. The load-bearing primary structure on the hall floor connects to the upper floor, which is designed as a wooden frame structure. To the outside, the building emanates compactness. Concrete, wood, and aluminium for the gates – the materials are illustrated, alongside the construction method. The new building is designed as a low-tech structure, limiting the supporting building technology to what is essential. In addition to the resource-saving construction, the building materials and component joints should be selected based on the principles of circular construction. The monolithic construction, featuring simply joined prefabricated elements and renewable raw materials, in conjunction with surface-mounted installations, enables an economical construction as well as easy dismantling and sorting. Modifications or extensions of technical systems are easily possible. By combining ecological and social aspects, the new plant fire station can become a pilot project.
