German Embassy in Tbilisi (Georgia), paused

The new building for the German Embassy in the southern urban area of Tbilisi ties in with the millennia-old tradition of building with clay. Similar to a relief, the embassy building is formed out of the ground and thus emphasises its earthly connection: The floor and the house are made of the same material. The existing stratification of the slightly sloping 7,300 m2 plot is taken up with horizontal bands of stamped clay blocks. The homogeneous material language of clay is used for all exterior walls, representative interior walls and the structure of the outdoor facilities.

In the construction of embassies, the intermeshing of the individual areas of use with their respective decidedly assigned outdoor areas plays an essential role. This favours the use of the same material for indoor and outdoor use. The ambassador's visa courtyard, office courtyard, residential garden and private garden each form their own security areas in connection with the embassy's associated rooms. These are subject to a complex network of functions, which one initially does not suspect behind the external appearance - representation arises through understatement.
