House for Film and Media, competition entry

The planned narrowing of the urban space along the B14 federal highway necessitates a reinterpretation of the roadside edge. The House for Film and Media is the first component of this urbanistic concept. The building's position in the visual axis of Marktstraße virtually demands that it be showcased. This would correspond to the media content, but on the other hand, the direct proximity to the graceful Leonhardskirche has to be considered.

Our design creates an expansion of the public space on the ground level beneath the deeply cantilevered structure, which stands as a wood structure atop a sculptural concrete baldachin. At the ground floor, the building with its lobby, restaurant, and multifunctional space opens up to the urban realm with expanses of glass, whereas the more introverted facilities such as movie auditoriums occupy the core of the upper floors.

The vertical path through the building is staged in manifold ways, can be used for presentations, and leads to a public rooftop patio surrounded by exhibition spaces. The building is crowned with a folded roofscape whose raised corners emphasize its special position. The facade is conceived as a semitransparent strip curtain, mediating between inside and outside, that is fragmented and can therefore be used subtly for media presentations.
