Jungfernheide Comprehensive School in Berlin

Located in close proximity to Siemensstadt, the design for the new Jungfernheide comprehensive school in Berlin-Spandau envisions a compact, circle-shaped building. This shape reflects the site’s former use as a sports field, and its positioning minimizes the impact on the landscape and the existing tree population. The circular typology also confers identity and provides a visible impetus for the neighborhood’s transformation.

Two circulation paths organize the school building’s interior: the northern section is dedicated to sports and features an integrated double three-court gymnasium, while the southern section contains common areas, including teaching spaces and the cafeteria. From the central entrance lobby, which receives ample natural light from two carved-out courtyards, the main stairs lead to the upper floors. Here, three teaching clusters are arranged around a forum. This configuration creates inviting spaces with various zones for communication, collaborative work, and periods of quiet concentration. Loggias, recesses, photovoltaic cornices, and adjustable, external shading devices create a lively interplay of openness, depth, and shadow on the facade, enhanced by the lush greenery on the terraces. The competition jury specifically praised “the juxtaposition of the building’s round exterior shape and its orthogonal interior.” This organically gives rise to “outdoor areas that adjoin the classrooms and define the transition to the natural environment.”
