House for Family and Education at Ostbahnhof, ongoing

The new building, which will house a family center offering educational and family counseling services as well as spaces for an adult education center, is being built on part of a public green space just north of the Ostbahnhof train station in Berlin. This new infrastructure site will strengthen the sociospatial networking of the neighborhood, which has been dominated until now by the presence of many multistory apartment buildings. The plans call for a two-story wood structure with a wraparound balcony and a gently sloping gable roof.

The House for Family and Education is an archetype that presents a quiet counterpoint to the large-scale buildings in the area, conveying a sense of comfort and security. It presents itself as an inviting point of contact for the entire neighborhood. The wraparound balcony and the use of greenery covering the entire exterior of the building link it with the surrounding outdoor space. A small park with play areas and an orchard provide recreational opportunities. All visitors pass through a generously designed entrance area to enter the building. The wide, forum-like switchback staircase becomes a communication area that fosters interaction between the facilities. As a whole, the functional zones are arranged to create spatial synergies. A balanced mix of uses, sustainable construction, and the use of robust and recyclable materials promise a comfortable and long-lasting building.
