Research and Development Center for Radiopharmaceutical Chemistry at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg

The Research and Development Center for Radiopharmaceutical Chemistry at the German Cancer Research Center is under construction on Heidelberg University’s »Im Neuenheimer Feld« campus. Here, researchers will develop and produce radiopharmaceuticals for clinical use. The new three-story building has a conventional reinforced concrete frame structure in order to maximize spatial flexibility in the laboratory areas, and it mediates between two adjacent research buildings of different heights.

When approaching from the street, the main entrance is accessible at ground level via a path that crosses the green area in front of the building. For logistical and organizational reasons, the ground floor contains laboratories and the pharmaceutical production area. The levels above include a mechanical equipment floor, a »theranostics« area – a contiguous laboratory landscape where researchers focus on diagnostics and therapy – and an office block with a kitchenette, a lounge area, open work booths and additional laboratory space. An atrium inside the building creates an attractive place for people to linger, equipped with benches and lushly filled raised planters. PV modules are installed on the intensively greened roof.

The north and south sides remain closed, thereby reflecting the service corridors that do not require daylight, whereas the work areas on the east and west sides have an open design. Exposed precast concrete elements on the facade represent the load-bearing reinforced concrete frame, while glass windows and slatted wood breast and wall panels fill the non-load-bearing portions of the facade at the open workspaces. Both the north and south facades will be accentuated with greenery up to a height of approximately 15 meters. The greenery will be planted directly in the ground and irrigated with rainwater collected from the roof, atrium, and outdoor areas.
