Expansion and Restoration of the Museum of Art and History

The Museum of Art and History is the largest museum in the city of Geneva and one of the most important in Switzerland. Our design involves restructuring and expanding the cultural building, which was constructed in 1910 according to plans by the Swiss architect Marc Camoletti. The aim is to create an open and public place, a social space that invites visitors to explore and linger.

In addition to reorganizing the existing spaces, the concept focuses on interconnecting the existing areas and integrating them with the public. Currently, the immediate surroundings of the museum consist of two public levels that have little connection to each other: the lower level is characterized by two heavily trafficked parallel streets, while the upper level offers direct access to the Old Town. The new museum will connect with the public sphere and its surroundings at all levels, becoming an urban space in its own right. The newly designed main entrance was created by transforming the neighboring park. Outer entrances to the various levels lead to a public, internal spatial continuum that functions as both an urban space and the museum’s lobby. Here, the public and the exhibition contents come into direct contact.
