Cube - Enabling Technologies Center in Munich

Interdisciplinarity plays a crucial role in Helmholtz Munich's strategy for the future. The interaction of various disciplines, including bioengineering and artificial intelligence, is intended to radically accelerate developments from basic research to clinical application. In the northwestern center of the Helmholtz Munich campus, the new Cube laboratory building is a striking architectural accent that highlights the special importance of this research and offers a continuous interior space that supports diverse forms of communication.

The design breaks with the obvious approach of structuring the laboratory areas compactly on top of each other. Instead, four flexible and expandable laboratory units are arranged like stair steps, each rotated 90 degrees on each floor. The exposed ceilings of the laboratory areas below become communication and recreation areas. Overlapping with the external office areas, the space is differentiated and divided into four different zones. These are connected by spacious open staircases, which symbolize interdisciplinarity. The route thus created leads from the foyer on the ground floor past the laboratories, which are glazed towards the interior, to the roof garden on the third floor, which offers views across the campus towards Munich and the Alps beyond. The façade concept makes the intertwining of biology and engineering visible as a design element: lab units and office areas are clearly visible on the façade and yet complement each other to form a harmonious whole.
