Phytotechnikum, University of Hohenheim, Expansion of the Research Greenhouse Facility, 2nd phase

The second phase of construction of the new research greenhouse facility on the University of Hohenheim campus includes additional greenhouses, laboratories, another ancillary services area, storerooms, climate chambers, and a separate quarantine area. This expansion augments the first phase of the “Phytotechnikum,” completed in 2020. It extends the facility northward and eastward, providing roughly an additional 14,000 square meters of space for agricultural and plant research, a primary focus of the research conducted at the university.

The design calls for an elongated, low-rise building whose compact layout is based on a laboratory grid with a clearly structured circulation concept. The spatial program is organized along an east–west circulation axis: work areas and ancillary services are to the north, and the greenhouses are to the south. The quarantine area is at the eastern end.

The 178-meter-long extension adopts the height of the existing building from the previous construction phase. The facade design produces a uniform appearance. In contrast to the extensive glazing of the greenhouses, the auxiliary building is clad with dark, profiled aluminum sheet metal. The north facade features fixed glazing that resembles display windows and provides natural lighting for the work areas behind. The main entrance to the auxiliary building is in the middle of the entry court. Here, the glazed facade also serves as a visual connection into the greenhouse complex.
